Our Technology

Dentroids’ ground-breaking technology represents one of the most significant paradigm shifts in the history of dentistry. The technology represents a platform that combines the following

  • automation and robotic tools

  • miniaturised photonics and novel lasers

  • state-of-the-art micro-engineering components (clamps, cameras)

  • artificial intelligence and connectivity capabilities

By doing so, Dentroid replaces outdated turbines, needles and excessive use of water irrigation.

The Dentroid device is carefully placed in the mouth and anchored in specific areas next to the tooth earmarked for restoration or crown construction. As a starter, the device scans the existing tooth structure and offers the dentist a digital display of the tooth. The built-in smart analytics and diagnostic aids will support the clinician in making the right diagnostic decision and mitigate indiscriminate/accidental removal of otherwise healthy tooth structure, operator errors and potential medic-legal issues.

Once is a decision to operate is made, the operator verifies the data displayed and uses Dentroids’ customised software to choose the type of preparation required. The digital design features allow for cavity or crown preparation to be depicted over the original tooth scan, prior to commencing the dental restoration. This will help achieve the gold-standard for minimally invasive dentistry.

When the dentist confirms the procedure to be performed, the laser removes the minimum amount of enamel and dentine from the tooth. For crown preparations, the crown design will be concomitantly uploaded to a zirconia milling machine where an ideal crown can be fashioned. This can be performed at the same time the laser is cutting the tooth so that once the laser has completed tooth ablation, the crown will be ready to be tried on the preparation; the fit verified, and the crown cemented. Job done in a single sitting.

Dentroid is spearheading the use of femtosecond lasers in dentistry. With this type of laser (used for decades in eye surgery) the following advantageous can be achieved over traditional rotary instruments or conventional lasers.

In the future, the technology is also anticipated to offer a platform for remote, compact and portable dentistry that will radically improve access to quality oral care for rural, remote and disaster-stricken communities.  This is facilitated through a suite of lightweight, portable, connected and battery powered laser and photonic devices that range from hand-held to desktop sized options, and are able to provide initial diagnostics, light procedures up to full restorations and crowns.
